“Soul Train Night” is the FUNKY TOWN show.
But what is a “Soul Train Night?”
It is a celebration of the golden days of black music with all the most famous songs transited by the legendary American TV show “Soul Train” from the 70s-80s-90s conceived and presented by Don Cornelius.
It is the vintage sound proposal of the era when funk and soul were evolving in popularity thanks to labels such as Motown of Detroit, Stax and Hi Records of Memphis, Atlantic of NYC, TK Records of Miami that made history at that time.
It is a “soul revue,” basically a parade of soul music stars. In the 1960s and 1970s the various artists were taking part to soul revues and, one after another, performed their hits for an audience that listened and danced. Artists such as Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Bill Withers, Michael Jackson and his brothers (The Jackson 5) and others often appeared in show cases.
It is a revival of the time when part of the soul music movement, with its everyday life stories of friendship, work, love and passion, but also of jealousy and violence, gave way to a more street, urban and engaging rhythm, giving rise to funk and funky-soul, where melodies with blues and gospel origins were grafted onto a beating African-American rhythmic core.
FUNKY TOWN, with their show “Soul Train Night,” bring back the emotions of funk and soul of those years by revisiting the songs with their own original arrangements, along with some of their own styled compositions.
